Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry (CAC): OpenScience Participation

Updated: Sep 27

In the second week of September, OpenScience made its presence felt at the Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry (CAC) 2024, an event that serves as an international benchmark for advancements in chemometrics within analytical chemistry. This year's CAC, held in Santa Fé, Argentina, brought together leading figures in chemometrics from around the world, including José Manuel Amigo from the University of Basque Country (Spain), Claudia Beleites from Chemometrix GmbH (Germany), and many other distinguished professionals from countries such as Chile, Iran, Italy, and Brazil.

The event was enriched by the diversity of its participants, who brought a variety of perspectives within chemometrics and analytical chemistry. The program was filled with lectures and papers addressing everything from theoretical data processing models to practical applications of chemometrics. In addition to academic sessions, the event offered cultural tours that highlighted the historical and cultural heritage of the city of Santa Fé, culminating in a celebration filled with wine, music, and tango dancing.

OpenScience Participation at the Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry (CAC)

This year, OpenScience actively participated in the event, bringing a large part of the team and showcasing technological innovations at an exclusive stand. We demonstrated our internally developed multispectral microscope, capturing in situ images and exploring potential partnerships with event participants.

We also highlighted our participation with poster presentations and an oral session:

  • Low-cost method using multispectral images to identify defects and impurities in coffee”, Daniel Lucas presented our low-cost multispectral imaging equipment used to identify defects and impurities in green coffee, achieving an accuracy of over 90%.

  • Olive Oil Quality Classification Using RADIAN ASAP Mass Spectrometry”. This work, conducted in collaboration with Waters and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply of Brazil (MAPA), employed advanced mass spectrometry techniques to detect adulterations and frauds in olive oil, achieving an impressive accuracy of 93%.

  • Recognition of Coffee Identity in Capsules and Classification of Their Sensory Attributes”. Using the REIMS equipment provided by Waters Brazil, this study advanced in the rapid identification of the chemical composition of seven different groups of coffee capsules, an important result for ensuring the authenticity of origin and quality of coffee.

  • Multispectral microscopy in the food safety of roasted and ground coffee”. This presentation highlighted a portable and low-cost device developed by OpenScience, in partnership with MAPA, for food safety in roasted and ground coffee.

Continuous Support for Scientific Events

OpenScience is proud to support and sponsor events like the CAC, which are crucial for the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge.

"I was very pleased to receive the invitation to sponsor the Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry (CAC), as I know the importance of this event for Chemometrics and had already participated in other editions. This one, in particular, was organized by admirable people, like professors Héctor Goicoechea and Alejandro Olivieri. Supporting events like the CAC is essential for OpenScience, as we believe in the importance of knowledge dissemination. Our team's participation in the CAC also gives us the opportunity to encourage young talents to start their careers on the right foot at such an event, promoting the development of future leaders in science."

-Guilherme Sabin, CEO da OpenScience

Continuing our ongoing commitment to innovation and technological accessibility, we have already supported the  VI Escola de Inverno de Quimiometria (2023) that took place in Brasília. We also supported the Woman Tech Sim Senhor (2024), known as the largest gathering of women in technology in Brazil, which had over 700 women registered. Our next support will be at the International Workshop on Hyperspectral Imaging na Unicamp.

We look forward to seeing you there!
